Over the last 30 years I have taken an interest in environmental issues and the two that I have thought the most about are climate change and energy. The burning of fossil fuels has a long history but with the advent of the industrial revolution and the following increase in population our monolithic fuel based culture has reached a peak and is now moving into decline. The monolithic fuel paradigm is no longer able to sustain us and as a consequence we have embarked on a series of resource wars in order to retain vested interests. It has been said that there is no silver bullet to solve this problem so we search for many answers to this problem that is fast becoming a crisis. For breaking news on climate change go to my blog . I was elected to Council in a 1996 by-election as a Southern Ward Councillor and have held the seat ever since.

I am married with an adult family and I am a graduate of Victoria University in Philosophy. .I also hold an RMA practicing certificate. When I stood for Mayor of Wellington in 2004 I received 18,500 votes opposing the incumbent.

Over the time I have been on Council I have developed an interest in energy and peak oil. I am a member of the Audit and Risk sub-committee and served on Wellington 's Water Management Agency Capacity as a board member for 3 years. I have also chaired the Grants sub-committee and served on the Wellington City Lender of Last Resort. In my capacity as a Councillor I have been a staunch advocate of open space on the water front and voted to protect coastal land from development – in particular, the proposed development at Ta Raekaihou Point and sale of sections at Owhiro Bay . I opposed variations 17 and 11 on the water front and support open space instead of more building. I think it was a mistake to sell Council parking buildings. I have always supported social housing, particularly as it was established with low interest Government money and recently Government has helped fund the bulk of the housing stock upgrade. I am strongly committed to a bicycle and pedestrian friendly city and so I opposed the reopening of Manners Mall to buses.

I firmly believe that water management under Capacity, as well as the Water Front Management Company and parking enforcement should come back to the Council to manage in-house. It would then be free of the profit takers.

I have consistently voted against the rate increases approved by the majority of councillors and which have seen home owners' rates double in the last seven years.

We need a cap on building height to retain the beauty and quality of life of Wellington .

We need to bring debt under control and live within our means to cope with the ongoing economic and financial crisis.
